The Midwest is America’s heartland, where folks still know the value of a dollar… and an education. The region has long topped the U.S. for rates of high school graduation, with only ten percent of the population over the age of 25 lacking a high school diploma or equivalent.
At the same time, it’s toward the bottom when it comes to college degrees… there are plenty of thrifty and smart folks in these parts who have seen the costs of college skyrocketing over the past few years and decided it’s not for them.
That’s not an option if substance abuse counseling is your goal. You’ll need to have at least some college behind you to become qualified for certification or licensure. You’re just going to have to find some way to balance both thrift and knowledge.
In Wisconsin, an associate degree can even take you all the way to the highest level of licensure in SUD counseling.
You can pay your respects to both of those core midwestern values by picking up a certificate or an associate degree in substance abuse counseling at one of the many affordable schools scattered from Ohio to North Dakota. And we have just the program for you somewhere on this list.
How We Selected the Most Affordable Certificate and Associate Degree Programs in the Midwestern United States
While there are a lot of great options to choose from in all of the states in the midwest, our goal is to give you only those that save you money compared to the alternatives. To figure out that relative affordability range, we first separated public from private schools. Without the kind of government financing that public schools receive, private colleges tend to charge more in general. Yet they also bring other advantages to the table, so you may have good reasons to consider them.
Next, we took each group and went state-by-state to figure out their average total cost of completion. Since each state has its own licensing requirements as well as costs of living, it only makes sense to keep comparisons within the state lines.
We got the total tuition cost by taking published per-credit tuition rates and multiplying them by the number of credits required to graduate each course. For schools operating on quarterly systems, we did a conversion from quarter to semester rates to keep everyone on the same page.
Every school in each group in each state that came in at no more than $1000 above the state average makes the cut. For those states where only a single school offers a certificate or associate program, that school gets included by default.
Going Beyond the Basic Costs To Pick the Right Program for Your Addiction Counseling Education
Plain and uncomplaining may be the reputation we have here in the midwest, but that doesn’t mean you should just settle for the least expensive school you can find. You deserve an education in addiction counseling that isn’t just affordable, but also personal.
With many different learning styles and approaches to substance abuse counseling available, these schools offer a different experience that can be perfect for one student and a wash out for another. So you will want to look beyond the price tag to figure out what the best fit for your needs is.
We help you out there with a thumbnail portrait of every program on the list. You’ll learn about unique options for field experience, whether the instructors bring a little extra knowledge and expertise to the table, or if the school has received recognition or funding from some major organization in SUD treatment.
You’ll also find a standard set of information about every program, including:
- The actual total tuition cost to complete it
- If that cost is lower than the state average for programs of that type, we let you know by how much
- Whether or not the school also offers related programs, including bachelor’s degrees that you may be able to transfer your credits toward if you decide to pursue a four-year degree
- What format the program is offered in, whether traditional, online, or a hybrid combination of the two
State-by-State: The Lowest Cost Addiction Counseling Associate and Certificate Programs in the Midwest
There is a great deal of need for substance abuse counselors in both urban and rural regions of the midwest, and these programs are your ticket to making a difference without busting your bank account.
